The fitment and material they're made of. Most are fiberglass.Some are even plastic. Polyurethane is the most durable.(an expensive)
Some of the fitment problems are -1 side longer than the other, height is off, or mounting surfaces don't mate correctly with the car.

Depends on your application. Some people use rivets, screws, double sided mounting tape(like for side mouldings).

If they don't fit the way they're suppose to, you may have to lengthen or shorten them.
If they do fit right, just painting them.
