5sfe to 4age swap

Hey everyone,
Here's what I got... I currently have a 1992 Celica GTS with a 5SFE engine in it. I also have a 4AGE and trans pulled from a FWD Corolla GTS. Is this a possible engine swap? I know the Celica ST from this year had a 4AFE in it and that should easily bolt over to a 4AGE. Is there any big differences between the two chassis? I know an ST would be preferrable for this swap, but the GTS body I have is in beautiful shape with very little rust and that's what I got to work with. Has anybody done this swap? Any info would be great.

The swap would be very similar, but ultimately probably rather dissaponting in the end. Even the last 16v 4age had about the same hp output as the 5sfe, but it is all in the upper rpms. The 5sfe has a lot more lower end grunt for around town (and specifically just getting the damn car moving, the GTS is rather heavy).

Obviously, wiring harness and ecu would be needed. Engine, transmission, axles, possibly a center crossmember as well.

So yes it is possible, but honestly, I wouldn't do it. Ultimately its your decision and this is just my opinion. 4ages can go for rather good money, I would try to sell it to source another (possibly newer since they were manufactured for over ten years) 5SFE. again, just my opinion.

edit: oh, I forgot that the mount on the timing cover side of the engine, at the right side strut tower, would have to be moved.

the reason for the swap is that the 5sfe has high miles on it almost 200,000 and the 4age I have has less than 100,000 closer to 70,000. I'm looking around on CL and stuff and everybody wants way too much for used 5sfe engines. I know the preferable engine would be a 3sge or 3sgte, but as we all know those can also cost a pretty penny. I intend to ride the 5sfe out at least until the end of summer, and I thought the 4age swap would be a good winter project, being as that I already have the engine and a car that could possibly support it. I will keep you posted.

Is there something telling you your 5S-FE is about to fall apart? Some of these engines have well over 300,000 miles on them, so you may be a long way away from having any problems. You can tell a lot by doing a compression check on your cylinders and see what you have. RobMilkshakes is right about 4A-GE. And even if I had a 50,000 mile 5S-FE in the garage, I wouldn't be inclined to use it as a swap for an already installed and running 200,000 mile 5S-FE unless you know something about that engine that concerns you (rod knock, weak compression in a cylinder, things like that).

Also, with as good of an engine a 4AGE is, from solely a milage stand point, you might actually be better off with the 5sfe or least on the same standing, depending on how hard both engines have been pushed. From (at least what I've seen) the 5SFE one of the most durable toyota engines after the 22r, maybe 4af as well, I've seen some corollas just go forever.

You'll want to get another 5S-FE instead of putting in the 4A-GE. Mostly likely the one you have only push out about 115 HP vs the 5S-FE 130-135 hp. Like someone said before the turq in the 4A-GE is going to have a hard time dragging the GT-S body. The later 4A-GE (High Comp) found in the 90-91 Corolla GT-S and 90-92 Prizm GS-i puts out 130-135 hp with a better turq range then the earlier models. These engines are harder to find and most likely the one you have is not it. If you do have this engine, it would be best suited to swap it into a 88-89 MR2 non supercharge.
