91 Celica Gear Oil

I Changed my CV shaft in my 91 Celica and now need to replace the gear oil that came out. Where does it go and what type will 80 90 work?

wow thats lube, not oil.

dont use that. even 50 weight would kill your transmission.

this isnt a big beastly muscle car or truck tranny, ok?

My hondas all used a variation of 10w-30 engine oil with friction modifiers.

I suggest thumbing a ride over to your toyota stealership and getting 2-3 quarts.

if you still have the owners manual, it will list it in there. a lot of somewhat modern 4 and 6 cylinder trannies use ATF or engine oil thickness fluids. each one requires individual mixtures though. some trannies are more robust then others.

IM glad I read on some other threads. that thin oil I was thinking about would have done damage!

75w90 seems to be recommended. lemme recheck that last number (90)

EDIT I confirmed 75w-90 here: What is the best gear oil for Toyotas?

matt, I'm glad you revised it. Some modern transmissions, including some celicas after 93 use ATF in the manual transmission(with the 5SFE), but not this generation. So please, check a source if you are not absolutely sure before posting something like that. Also gear lube and gear oil are virtually interchangable terms.

Cougar, if your transmission was shifting fine, just use 75w90.
