Transmission interchanges

Hello all. I'm looking to swap a 1990 Celica over to 5-speed. I'm trying to collect info as far as which transmissions I can use for the swap. I know there were two in the 90-93 range, but could I use a manual trans from other years or other cars? I don't need anything special, it's only stock and will remain that way. Just seeing what my options are. By the way, this car is a 5S-FE. Thanks!

I looked up on www.car-part.com what salvage 5-speed transmissions are listed for a 1990 Celica 5S-FE. Only 90-93 Celica transmissions come up, which tells me you need to stay only with Celicas and only in the 90-93 Gen 5 family.

Assuming you want to replace an automatic with a manual. Just remember what you all need to put a 5-speed in there (interior floor pedals, hydraulics for clutch operation, clutch, engine flywheel, reverse relay, axles, ECM specific to manual transmission cars, etc.). You would need a 90-93 donor car to provide you with all this anyway. Pretty big job. You will need to be prepared with instructions on how to do it all.

You may want to ask SCT on this forum, he did the conversion on an ae92 corolla, as well there are a few threads about the conversion in newer corollas that are archived.

You could look at the transmission from the 94-99 celicas as well, they have been swapped. they're porbably not coming up because they are an S54 transmission compared to an S53 that the 5th gens came with. the 94-99 ones supposedly have upgraded synchros. Avoid similar year tranmissions from MR2s. They are the same transmission but where the shift cables connect to(I just totally spaced on a name) are on the opposite side due to the way the engine sits in those.

ECT Auto has different TPS then non-ECT auto and manual. Also ECU is different.
You can use any tranny mate to S-Series: MR2, Camry.
Tranny from 90's V6 Camry works also.

Thank you for the information! Anybody know if the existing axles will work with the S54 trans?
