3SGE help

I have a decent amount of bolt on mods.. still waiting on my Underdrive pulley and 3rd gen header. So tell me right now have these things CAI, Exhaust, Wires, Plugs, No back seat (hey thas wieght) and little things like that about to advance my timing to about 16 degrees what should I estimate my 1/8th or 1/4 time would be I will have a Apexi SAFC and TWM shortshifter as well.
So basically I just need to know my aprox time I should expect..

isnt the stock timing setting 10 degrees btdc? sooo, taking it to 16 would be retarding it instead of advancing it huh?

that's a good question... you would think advancing means going lower than 10, but actually the spark will fire sooner the higher the degree of BTDC which creates more pressure....i've heard the terms ATDC (after top dead center), but i think this refers to camshafts. Through my experience 10 degrees BTDC ran the smoothest, when i turned distributor past 10 (base timing) the engine was more likely to ping, seemed to have more vibration, going lower than 10 the car would run hot??? So i think its correct that the higher the BTDC the more advanced since pinging means detonation which means too much pressure. I think that the air/fuel ratio would have to be changed in relation to the timing...this is a guess? anyone?

yeah. overheating, and pinging are both signs of bad timing. and actually shows both extremes of it

overheating because the spark fires so early the piston is still moving up when the explosion occurs that would be retarted timing.

pinging is from advanced timing. the fuel air mixture actually explodes before the spark plug fires

the closer one can get the timing to firing exactly at tdc the better, thats when there is more squish in the cyl.

god gas turbine compressors are so much easier
