Alarm help

New to me 1996 Celica convertible. Battery went dead, and now the alarm goes off every time I open the doors. Any ideas? I have never had an alarm on a car. There is no obvious shut off on the key.

Found a small toggle switch near the clutch. Key in "on" position, flipped switch, alarm off!

Since we don't even lock our houses here I don't have much experience with alarms.

If is like other Celicas, it uses a remote that has to be detected by the system. The remote will lock/unlock the doors and enable/disable alarm.
To program in a remote:
1. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the RUN position.
2. Toggle the switch you found under the dash above the clutch on/off three times at rate of about once per second
3. Stop with the switch in the off or valet position
Dash turnsignal indicators should flash 3 times to indicate it is ready to receive the signal from the remote. If they do not flash, go back to step 2 and try again.
4. Press button on remote and turn indicators should flash to indicate detected.
5. Turn toggle switch back to the ON position.
6. Remove ignition key
7. Test door locks/alarm.

Didn't look this up for your specific model but thats the way it works for a 92 Celica GT.

You can find remotes for this system online at several places (with programming instruction included) but before ordering, you will need to know if is factory-installed or dealer-installed. The dealer should be able to tell you if is factory or not from the VIN.

Good Luck,
