17 inch rims on 1991 Celica GT

Hey guys, I am thinking of putting on 17 inch rims on my 91 celica. I currently have 16's right now. What are your thoughts and experiences on this decision? I wanted to know if my ride will be alot more bumpier, speed, acceleration loss...Just overall pros and cons etc...

Thanks alot

It all depends on what size tires you run. I am running 215/45/17 and I never really noticed the ride being more bumpy, maybe a little but not anything really noticable. As long as you don get massively heavy wheels and keep the overall tire diameter close to stock you shouldn't really feel any acceleration loss

I would personally go for the 215/45. that little extra sidewall would absorb more from the road and it still looks plenty low profile enough. Also would still be close to your stock tire size.

I have Scion wheels and 215/40R-17 General Altimax HP tires on my '92 Celica GT. The circumference is correct (speedometer 3% over so could probably go to a 225 or a 45 profile) and I like both the handling and the ride. This is a great fit for me and is a very good combination.

Also is the size difference of the tire from 16 inch to 17 inch noticeable on the car?

Rocket9, I haven't noticed any problems with bumps except speed bumps. I'm a lot more careful around them. I keep the tires inflated to 35 to keep bottoming of the wheel away. Actually, the 40 profile 17-inch wheels make it handle VERY well.

Adjusting tire pressure should take care of performance differences between 16 and 17. I assume you weren't referring to visuals.

It could have meant visuals, performance, or feel...

But it all depends on the width and its height ratio.

say a 215/40/16 will be a lot different than a 215/70/16 which is essentially a truck tire.
