Tiptronic Problem

My buddy has a Celica (01) like mine. When you move the shifter over into M-mode, the "M" on the dash doesn't illuminate and the up and down shift buttons don't work. I've honestly never heard of anyone having this problem. Apparently, the previous owner was an old bag and didn't use it once in the 4 or so years she owned it. Car is unmolested and bone stock. I checked the obvious, operator error, fuse etc. I'm thinking it's something to do with the shifter vs. the buttons on the wheel since I can't even get it to read "M" on the dash.

Any ideas???

I suggest you check the components of the shifter itself, it seems to me like a switch isn't doing its job anymore.
