Gen5 studdering during idle

I have a 1990 celica st with 203,XXX miles. recently I had a couple of problems with the car, it died on me a few times. put a new distributor and coil in it and it stopped dying on me but then after a day it started running extremely rough. since then ive done the fuel filter, plugs and wires, IAC and MAP, and the cat as it was clogged. the car runs great while driving but when at an stop the car hiccups or studders sometimes every 30 seconds, sometimes every 3. any idea are much appreciated

Do you maybe have a crack in the air inlet tube. They are flexible and tend to crack over many miles. I've replaced mine on both a 92 and a 87.
If so, you'll get a rough idle as the crack will be after the air sensor on the air box.

I actually have an aftermarket K&N filter so theres no cracks there. I just took off the intake and put it back on so its all snug as well

I would say if the car has idle issues and you have replced most things already to investigate the EGR vavle. Could be partially applied when its not supposed to be and adding additional air at idle which would lean it out into a possible lean misfire. Just an idea.

And you might want to check your igniter. Sometimes igniters (although not as much as coils located within the distributor) will tend to cause probems when they warm up. Often this can be observed by tachometer acting a little funny reading engine speeds. Sometime the check engine light will come one. But if you can get your hands on a known good igniter, try swapping that out and see what happens. You can get them in salvage yards quite reasonably.
