2nd Generation Gen 2 3sge 2 x thermo fan temp sensors? Can i just use 1?

As some of you may or may not know i am in the process of putting a st182 3sge gen 2 into my st162.

The ol' 3sge only has one thermo temp sensor for the radiator fan, on the water inlet. This gen 2 3sge has two, one in the radiator (like the 5sfe st184), and one at the water outlet.

can i just use the one at the water outlet? (as i don't have a thermo temp sensor fitting or ability to fit a thermo temp sensor into my radiator) I tried to fit my original water inlet with the temp sensor, but the stud spacing is significantly different, so no go

Theres no risk or error or issues that it could cause of just using the water outlet thermo sensor from the gen 2 3sge? It will be using the original thermo fan switch from the old gen 1.

What doe everyone else usually do?

Thanks heaps and in advance,
as always, its appreciated greatly.

If the ECU looking for 2 sensors, you'll need 2. Don't know what the ECU will do if one is missing. It may keep the fan running constantly. Or run engine in safe mode.

No.

The thermo fan temperature sensors do not go through the ecu. they go to a thermo fan switch, which then goes to the relay box and the thermo fans. It is part of the body loom and not the engine loom. I'm using the original st162 thermo fan switch, fans, relay boxes and radiator, which only uses the one temp sensor that is originally mounted onto the thermostat housing of the gen 1 3sge. But there is no provision for such at the same original position on the gen 2 3sge.

I have done all the temp sensor appropriate wiring for the ecu and gauges, and none have any relevance to the thermo fan.

I just want to have a solution that involves using what i have then having to weld in a thermo fan temp sensor at the thermostat, simply cause i don't have a TIG and will have to pay someone.

In that case you'll ok to use one. The fan may run more often then it need to. Coolant will be a bit hotter at the outlet.

Hi Pineapple, thanks for the reply mate.

Yea, come to think of it your right.

It will just naturally run cooler. I spose if it runs too cool i can then take the annoying plunge of getting the water inlet welded with a thermo fan switch provision put in.

but for the moment, yea i rekon that would be worth a go. i will just use the sensor on the water outlet.

Tis my daily driver, and its been off teh road since feb eva since the engine blew. This should hopefully be a long term fix and alot more reliable i hope.

You can try to find another switch from another Toyota which run at different temp. Don't need to be on same engine. I know A series (4A, 7A) water outlet sensors works. Don't remember what temp they work on.
