A 1973 Celica ST for Portugal should be the TA22 with 2T-B engine with 113hp.
Your friend's 1974 GT would be a TA22 with a 2T-G with 124hp.
Problems are the same as any other 30 year old car (ie nothing particular to the Celica).
- rust in lower panels
- worn mechanical parts (piston rings, gearbox synchros, etc).
- faded trim
- worn suspension bushings
