A140L Transmission Question (on a 1987 Celica)

I won the bid on a 1987 Celica ST that works fine in 1st or R, but will not go into 2nd, 3rd, or O/D. I am going to pick it up and bring it back on a tow dolly, but I came across the following info in the troubleshooting section for the same transmission on a Camry (A140L):

Troubleshooting for "No lock-up in 2nd, 3rd, or O/D"
Electronic control faulty - Inspect
Valve body faulty - Inspect
Solenoid valve faulty - Inspect

I wondered if anyone has done these steps on an A140L (and how), how in-depth these steps are (to do in someone's driveway even?), what worked for you if you did, and any tips or experiences you could share with me. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Tracy

Followup - This ended up just being a broken governor gear in the transmission ($39 and 2 hours of my time). Further info available for anyone needing it.
