Well, this is the full description of the attempt to diagnose it...
Back Yard mechanic without a volt meter or 1990 Celica (not GT)
No start- The no start problem came on overnight suddenly after 1 month of ownership, however for a short period of time before that, the car was backfiring (owner says) and stumbling.
Sounded to me right away that it was too rich.
First we checked spark, bright strong spark, white to blue in color. Plugs VERY dark, as well as covered in fuel. Spark was bright, and even strong enough to get me through the handle of my large craftsman screwdriver. Then we replaced the plugs anyways...
Obviously that didn't fix it.
Side note, the first time we tried firing it up today, it started to fire, and then went back to just cranking.
Compression check: (engine was NOT warm at all, had been sitting for a month) cyl 1-4 130 130 60 90. I know this is low even for a cold engine, and the HUGE difference in pressure from cyl to cyl is a problem, but I also know that this is not the cause. It is probably making the problem worse, not being able to get much compression, but it should still run at that.
When I disconnected the fuel pump, and cranking again, the car almost started!!!!! It cranked, with much assistance from actual combustion, and actually almost started at one point, when I started hearing it peter out I figured it was burning fuel, so I plugged the pump back in, and immediately it went back to just cranking.
when I pulled the plugs, they were very wet with fuel.
It seems like its running VERY rich. Low compression will make this problem seem worse, and who knows, with full compression, maybe it would want to start, but I don't think its the root problem. The owner of the car has cranked it LOTS over the last month and the engine has not seen any running, so he may have washed out the walls in those 2 cylinders. Hopefully once its running and the oil gets back up into the cyl walls some compression will return.
Side note, I could not hear the fuel pump priming at all. I assume its just really quiet.
What would cause this? Any other ideas I might not be thinking of?
Oh, also we checked all fuses, but not the pump relay. Don't think its that, because it really has me convinced there is TOO much pressure.
What are the chances that all the injectors are stuck open? Probably very low...
If the pressure reg goes out, does the car want to go rich or lean? Can it fail both ways?
How about vacuum leaks?
Pump working too hard?
maybe an ECU reset?
If you have read to this point, thank you SO much. This would be nice to figure out.
