Gen1 77 celica: no turn signals

I just got a 77 Celica & can't get the turn signals to work. I checked the bulbs, the fuse, & the switch, all fine. I have power to all the bulbs but some still don't light. I think it's the flasher module but can't find a replacement. The one the auto parts store said is the replacement uses a different connecter. So i wired it in but nothing. The other flasher module they say fits is a 2 blade while the original is a 3 blade. At this point I don't know what to do. Flasher part#:81980-12030

Advance Auto Parts has a Tridon (Novida Tech. Inc) Electronic Turn Signal Flasher (Part No. EP35 for $12.99) which has the 3 terminals that I think will fit your 1977 Celica properly. A 3-terminal flasher is typically used where a single flasher is shared for both the turn signals and the hazard warning signals.

Otherwise, to test, take a look at where terminals 1, 2 and 3 go into the socket. With a 12V test light, key ON, move the turn signal to either a left or right turn, then with one end of the 12V test light on a ground, put the other end into the socket where terminal 2 would go in. Does it light up? If so, the wiring involving the turn signal switch is working fine and the fuse is good.

Now, put the ground end of the 12V test light into terminal 3, and the other end in terminal 2. Does the 12V test lamp light up? If so, good, your ground side of the circuit is working fine.

Now, with a paper clip or short strand of insulated wire, put one end in terminal 2 and the other end in terminal 1. Now your turn signals on the side you have the turn signal switch set to should be on steady, both front and back. Are they?

Turn the key to OFF, return your turn signal switch to center, and remove the jumper wire.

If all this checks out and works as stated, then your turn signal flasher is defective.

The one I wired in was like the one from Advanced Auto but from Car Quest. It has 3 terminals but much wider layout then the original. I used a connector from a 74 malibu to wire it in but it does not work. I tested everything, it's the flasher. Now all I need is a new flasher, anybody know where to find one? The one's the auto parts stores say it is is a lie.

Well, the flasher part number you provided in your original post has been superceded by Toyota Part No. 81980-12H01.

You can order this part for $32.45 at www.1sttoyotaparts.com (I think there is a $10 minimum shipping charge on it as well). Otherwise, you would have to see if you can find a similar vintage Toyota in a salvage yard somewhere to get a used one. Don't know how many late 70's Toyotas are in salvage yards anymore though.

Fixed it. After all the hassle I decided to test everything again. Everything was fine tested right. It didn't make sense I had power at the bulb but it wouldn't light. So on a wim I cut off the socket and put a new one on, low & behold problem fixed. I hate these electrical grimlins.

So your turn signals and hazard flasher did not work, and the only thing that was wrong was a bulb socket? That seems strange! One would think the side opposite of where the problem was would have worked, proving the flasher functioned properly. I don't understand how one bulb socket prevented "everything" from working.

None-the-less, you got the problem solved. Congrats!!
