hello i have a 1990 celica gts 5 speed. I threw a rod back around christmas time, and its finally time to put the newer motor in it. im pretty experienced at mechanical work. ive owned about 5 tiburons and have done numerous trany and engine changes.
im in the proccess of pulling the motor, and was wandering if i could pull both at the same time?
im nearly done with prep work i have the wiring, fuel, ac, ps, shift linkage off. all thats left is the exhaust, axes, and mounting bolts, if it can all come out at once.
im hoping to have it running by the end of the month, as it is a side project and is 15miles from my house.
According to the shop manual, removing the engine/transaxle together out the top is the recommended way.
There is an online shop manual at www.celicatech.com that provides the step-by-step procedure for the removal and installation of the 5S-FE in a 5th Gen Celica (it is the 1993 version, but I'm sure it would be identical for your 1990 Celica. Here is the link, if you register:
Go to the Engine Mechanical Section, Cylinder Block (5S-FE), and you will see pages EM-268 through EM-311, which is the section on removing and reinstalling the 5S-FE/transaxle assembly for a 5th Gen Celica.

FILL TRANSAXLE OIL
M/T w/4A–FE Engine
Oil grade: API GL–4 or GL–5
Viscosity: SAE 75W–90 or soW–90
M/T w/5S–FE Engine, A/T
Fluid type: ATF DEXRON@ II
is this saying that the 5 speed 5sfe trans takes atf dexron II fluid??? before i would have assummed 75w90 gear oil, but just want to check since im not a toyota tech.

I think it's saying the auto trans takes Dextron II

Sorry about unknowingly violating copyright infringement. It won't happen again.
is there anything i should watch out for on the 5sfe engine or the 5-speed trans thats common? i know the power steering line in the back is a problem . i bought a new one and a new starter for when i replaced the motor.
From what I've seen even some Toyota service manuals prior to 1992 list using ATF for the S53 trans so its likely that may not be a typo. At 1992 and after they switch to listing 75w90 for the same transmission. The 75w90 change was supposedly to extend the life of the transmission. As far as I know 75w90 was used in my transmission but now at 160k, my third gear synchro is going out. Second and Third gear seem to be the ones prone to this and are fairly common. I switched over to using Synchromesh fluid. It has a consistancy much like that of ATF and haven't seen any issues in the last 10k miles and my grind was significantly reduced, although now I'm just used to double clutching that gear.
Synchromesh is GM gear oil. Pennzoil makes a version of it, should be able to find it at any parts store. However, unless you have a gear grinding already I wouldn't recomend it. If the transmission is fine, I'd say just use 75w90. I used the synchromesh after seeing a few recommendations and figured "why not?" since I had a significant grind on third.

i would recommend getting a new water pump. maybe thermostat. i would replace most of the things that tend to go out after a few years. possibly some gaskets too. the more old stuff you replace with new the less work you might need to do down the road. plus its a lot easier to replace parts when the engine is out of the bay
heres the death of my engine... a rod broke completly next time im out im pulling the engine out and removing the pan for further inspection then comes the new one
