High Pressure Turbo in 2003 GT

I was trying to do some research on this but found little to no answers on the general internet or through search on here.

I want to put a turbo charger in my 2003 Celica GT but one of my friends says the engine won't be able to handle it and if anything I would have to buy something brand new and performance based. Is this true? The car/engine currently (Stock 1zz) has 75000 miles on it. Any information would be great.

Thanks.

Edit: If I do need a new engine what would be the best to go with at this point?
