Does anyone know how to properly adjust the idle on a 1996 Celica GT with an 5SFE engine? Chiltons shows a diagram with instructions to remove a rubber cap to expose an adjustment screw located on the top of the throttle body assembly. My engine looks similar to the one in the diagram (engine type not listed) but I can not find any adjustment screw on the throttle body or rubber cap.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, your car won't have an idle adjustment screw like the earlier models. This is because the idle is controlled via the idle air control valve and the ECU. What symptoms are you experiencing? If it's idling rough or idling too high, then I'd strongly suggest cleaning the idle air control valve (IACV) with some carb cleaner. It's best to clean the throttle body at the same time too.

Thanks for responding so quickly! My idle is a bit slow and which causes a slight hesitation and a vibration when stopped for a traffic light, etc. I need to locate the idle air control valve and try out your suggestion.

You're very welcome. The idle air control valve will be located either underneath or to the side of your throttle body. You'll see an electrical connector going into one side of it. The same thing happened with my Corolla, and the idle was cured as soon as I cleaned the IACV.

Be sure to also check the gasket between the throttle body and IACV while you have everything off. Another tip is to apply quite a lot of pressure when undoing the screws, as they can become easy to round after years of sitting there. Good luck!

between 91 and 92 they made a few revisions to the 5SFE, the idle control and addition of a knock sensor are two that I can recall right now.

I have a somewhat similar issue going on. My idle sits too low, almost feels like a miss, it isn't as apparent at 800-900 RPM but is again if I bump the throttle up to about 1200. So, I'm a little lost at this point. I'm going to try to clean the ICV again in the near future.
