Do you know how long it has been since the gear oil has been changed (and for a fact that it is full)???
I'd sure check it to be sure it is full. Some transmissions are sensitive to synchronize wear too... but in your case I don't know if that could cause your problem.
Hopefully somebody else will chime in here and enlighten us on that.
