You had a 7afe, that would be the easiest. Direct swap, no changes. It came in the 93-97 Corollas with the 1.8L and 94-99 Celica STs. It is also possile to use a 4afe or even an imported 5afe, but one of the biggest problems is wiring for the fuse box IIRC for the 4afe (not really sure about the 5afe).

Yes, you have a 7AFE engine. The 1.6L is a 4A engine. If the celica is an ST model, it will use the same transmission series as the corollas. FWD A seres engines use c Series transmission so the they will bolt up, although the different variants will have different drive ratios inside.

You can replace it with the 1.6L, everything will match up. I haven't found too much regarding the wiring although I seem to remember hearing (this is purely from what I've read, I have not done this so it would require more research) that if you just used the 4AFE longblock and used all the wiring and sensors from the 7afe the ecu will compensate. One thing that may require modification is the exhaust. although if you just use the 7afe exhaust manifold you shouldn't have to change anything, I believe.
