First, I think this should be moved to hardcore/tech/competition, you'll get more opinions there...

But to answer the question- not necessarily. The only good way to figure this one out is to fool around with your shift points a little and see what works best for you.

I haven't had a car I could put the revs all the way up in yet; for example, the T-bird Turbo Coupe I had was redlined at 6200 rpm on the tach but could only sustain about 5600-5700 safely (BAD valve float!). The Camry I have now is redlined at 6k but I only ever took it to 5800 once... any higher than 5400-5500 on that motor is torture. It simply doesn't breathe well enough top-end.

The point is, you may find you have better acceleration by not winding it all the way out. So go experiment a little *disclaimer- make sure PoPo isn't anywhere near you!*

Steve

I have a 91 w/ a 5SFE. Mine takes redline abuse most of the day, everyday. I can feel my power fall off around 5800RPM but redline is at 6250, and my car makes a sweet backfire sound when I redline it. I figured it was worth the extra abuse.

depends on the car and where its power band is.....my redline is 7000 but i always shift at around 6500 to stay right in my peak power band after shifting.....
