2000 Celica Gt engine noise

Hello all, new to the forum...I am looking at a 2000 Celica Gt with 120,000 miles for my son. I haven`t seen the car except from pics. The guy says it has a ticking noise (lifters maybe?) from the engine only when the car is first started after sitting overnight. He says that when the car warms up (5-10 minutes) the noise stops....any ideas to what this could be? Any sounds coming from the engine scares me. I don`t want to have to dump money into this car right away. I also have a 97 Celica GT with 147,000 miles and never had a problem.

Any help would be great, Thanks guys....

The valve clearances may be a bit out of spec. Its hard to tell severity without actually hearing it.

Thanks for the reply...Just curious why the chattering would quit after warming up, he said it only does this when cold starting the car...I don`t know, that little voice is saying stay away from this car, I was going to trade him a 77 280z that needs nothing for the Celica. I`m going this weekend to check the car out, what should I listen/look for?

the 1zz is a rather reliable engine, honestly it doesn't sound like a huge problem, if the clearances were way out of spec you would hear it clearly even while the engine is warmed up.

That being said, I would still check it out. That little voice said to stay clear of my Celica, I didn't listen and even though she's a good car, now that I've essentially replaced everything, I still regret buying her.
