There are several free plugs. All are located about half way up the engine block. Look up from underneath to see them best.

Freeze plugs are much larger than that.

Yes, like I said look up underneath and on the sides of the engine. you'll see a few about 40-50mm or so in diameter (IIRC) if this is an S series engine, do you have the 2.0L or the 1.6L

It's a 2 liter GTI , there is a small hole in the engine block

The weather here has been freezing so I drained the radiator but now I've discovered water leaking from a small hole underneath the alternator on the engine block.

Is the hole threaded?
If so, it may be the block coolant drain and you've lost the bolt that plugs it.
