front crankshaft oil seal

Alright ive been messing around with this for about an hour and havent been able to get the new oil seal in the same depth as it was before.

So my question is how much does it really matter if its sticking up a little bit above the original depth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before i give up and head home.

Hmmm? It should sit flush.
Are you sure all of the old seal was removed?
Did you lightly tap it in?
Positive it's the right seal?

yep its the right seal. Matched it up with the old one and everything. Seal came out complete nothing was left behind cause i made sure to clean it out before putting the new one in.

was also warned about getting too much grease in so i made sure i just put a light coat on.

Ya i tapped lightly at first then hit harder. Engine is still out of the car too.

no crankshaft is still in there. Talked to a classmate yesterday and he said to get a new seal and heat up the area first then try to knock it in.

I mean was the crankshaft EVER taken out? Bearings and thrustwasher replaced?
I'm wondering, if it uses a thrust washer, is it properly installed. If it's not, it can prevent the crankshaft from seating properly and then prevent the seal from seating properly.

Gotcha.
Is there any front to back play in the crankshaft?

Well turns out I'm an idiot and didnt check the two parts closely enough cause the jackass at NAPA can't seem to give me the right parts.

But anyways the new seal from rock auto went in very easily but now I'm facing a new problem. Theres a washer that looks like it goes inbetween the seal and the crankshaft pulley but im not sure. Neither my father nor me could remember where it goes but we think its either that or perhaps it went with the clutch. Any ideas would be greatly appericated since we couldnt find anything online or in the haynes/chilton book.

At least now Ive learned my lesson to have better organization and perhaps start taking pics of everything.

Heres a pic of the washer I'm not sure about.

That goes between the crankshaft gear and the front cover.
The side thats facing up in the picture, is the side that goes inside towards the gear . It helps keep the timing belt in place and that "smooth" side will not damage the timing belt.

Yeah actually I was. I just noticed the washer doesn't have the slot for the key on the crankshaft.
Hmm? Idduno where that one goes then.

damn, this is turning out to be one hell of a set back. Time to find some exploded drawings or take the transmission off and see if it goes with the clutch.
