1zz-fe Rebuild Question

Well my 02 celica gt spun a bearing yesterday at 61k miles. I drove it maybe 3 miles before i realized the knocking. Im just wondering how hard it is to rebuild these motors. I plan on pulling out the motor tomorrow, but is there anything else i should do while im changing the rod bearing?

The earlier 1ZZs are notorious for heavy oil burning at relatively low mileage, swapping the pistons and rings for a revised '03+ set would prevent this.

We just purchased a 2000 Celica GT from someone on Craigslist. They neglected to tell us the car burns 1 qt of oil per day. Its the 1ZZ engine. I hear the newer pistons have 8 oil port holes rather than 4 and the piston groove is deeper. Anyway does anyone have a ballpark estimate on how many labor hours it would take to do the following as I am contemplating which one to do
1. Remove the old engine and re-ring and replace bearings with the upgrades
2. Or I can get a mechanic to remove the old engine and replace with new(how many hours does this take)

If you're going to replace the entire engine, I'd recommend swapping to a 2zz instead, the labor cost is going to be about the same, but you'll have a much better platform(If you've got an auto though, the 2zz automatic is slightly slower than the 1zz due to the 2zz having a later, steeper power curve)
