Is it just difficult to take it out of first or are the other gears grinding when you try them? Have you checked the linkages right below the shifter or where they connect on the transmission?

thanks for your reply i had someone look at it yesterday i dont know if they knew what they were doing they said it looked like there was a bushing missing on something that went into the transmission a control arm or something i guess its not catching where its suppose to so theres alot of play from left to right in the shifter does that make sense ?
From the bottom of the shifter runs two linklages up through the firewall and connect to two small arms on the transmission, these actually select the gear. At the end of the linkage where to connects to those arms there is a pressed in rubber bushing. I have one that is wore out as well, but I can still manage to get it out of gear, its just a little sloppy for me. There are no real replacements for those bushings directly since they were pressed in, but you can get after market brass bushings for them.
You can take a look for yourself to see if they're wore out. If you can have someone try to move the shifter around while you look under the hood. Look to the right of the engine, just underneath the black intake tube that comes from the air filter, you should see the linkages moving about some, you'll also hear a distint clicking noise from it. The arms are on the back side of the transmission, but you should be able to see them without even removing anything.
