Sadly there is less of a demand for standard transmission cars in the US and they seem to be a dying breed. Usually the only people that still buy cars with a manual are either people who already know how to drive one and they don't mind it, or those (like myself) that will only drive a car with a manual transmission because they honestly enjoy it. Cars, for many, are largely viewed as being appliances, hence the casual nature of talking on the phone, eating, etc while in control of something that is in fact dangerous. If these appliances take more effort to operate, not as many people may be interested, but there are those who are interested out there still.
That being said, this is not an insult to auto drivers as daily grind traffic can become tiresome, or living with a lot of hills, or driving for a living, etc as there are plenty of enthusiats who drive autos. I just added this because I didn't want anyone taking what I said the wrong way.
Prices don't differ much but the used manual cars tend to be on the market for a little while longer.
