gen 7 Cruise control stalk broken off

2000 GT auto I just bought, the previous owner broke off the cruise stalk on the steering wheel. Two routes: replace it right, or rig it.

To replace it right, do I have to pull the wheel itself, or can I get to it if I pull the horn/air bag pad? Never messed with one of these wire rings, but sort of need to learn as I also have 1999 Sienna that the horn is intermittent, so this might be the time.

There is a double wire sticking out. Seems like it needs three leads - on/off, reduce, accelerate. Anyone think of a way to just mount a little button that would just set it? Could not find the stalk or wiring diagram in the factory manual.

Yes, the steering wheel must come off to get to the inards and remove the rest of the broken stalk and install a new one.
It's not that bad. Make sure the front wheels are aimed perfectly straight ahead before removing the steering wheel.
This way, when you reinstall the steering wheel, it will be aligned with the front wheels.

Hi all, I found this thread
DIY: Aftermarket cruise control install
that deals with newer cars. When I asked my dealer about the stalk, they gave me the same Toyota part number - 84630-20151. Since I have everything already there except the stalk itself, (the writeup is for a full retrofit with drive by wire) shouldn't this work? The ACDelco D1919E for $50 at rockauto beats $140 dealer, and I can't find one used.

And while we are thinking near the steering wheel... I like to put my hand at the bottom of the wheel when cruising, and it looks like the Corolla steering wheel has the four side connection wheel instead of racier 3,6,9 oclock Celica wheel. Seems like these would interchange - ideas?

Still tinkering with this... I bought a complete steering column from a 2000 Solara at a junk yard to fix the horn on my 1999 Sienna. It has a cruise control stalk that I can adapt to mount in the Celica, but there are three wires instead of two. The Sienna/Camry/Solara cruise switch has red, white, and white/black wires, and the 2000 Celica just has red and white (both modular plugs have a horn ground as well). Anyone know a combo that will make this work? It would save me at least $50 compared to buying a new switch. Thanks.

I am probably done with this project, but writing it up for the next person who may need it. I checked the leads, and the three wire switch uses one dedicated to the on/off switch, so I figured it would not work. Both types use differing resistance to cue the computer which action is being requested - my ohm meter registered .25 for one, .5 for another, etc.

Summary for 2000 Celica GT that had cruise control original, but stalk broke off:
The excellent forum linked above used an ACDelco D1919E, Rock Auto was cheapest, but I needed it quick. Autozone could order same part as a Wells sw6214. $57 shipped to store beats $140 at dealer.

You can not do the pin switch that was pictured in the other forum, as the 2000 uses a bigger pin, but the switch is the same. So, I just snipped the old two wires coming out of old connector and fed them into the new connector and voila, all good.

I did not end up having to remove steering wheel, just the airbag assembly.
