Help with 92 celica

Heyy guys,
I went to do a smog check(california) on my 92 celica gt,
Everything passed except emissions test
They told me that its my EGR, i dont know what that means or what that is.
I failed it at 25 mpg
Where it says NO (PPM), The max is 516 and my car got 618.
I dont know what to do, and before i take it to a mecanic, I would like to see if you
guys can help me out here.

Thanks.

The egr is an emissions part to help balance fuel and air, it is located under the hood towards the back of the engine just behind the intake manifold. Its cost about 150 - 200 bucks but you can clean it with carb cleaner. But is kinda of a pain unless you have prior repair experience.

IT looks as such.

Thank you,
I dont have experience at all.
Do you think by cleaning it would pass the smog test?
Or should i just buy a new one in your opinion?

Since you do not have anyone experience I would suggest taking it to a mechanic and having them replace it. This is a part that if you mix up the tubes or mess up the pipe your car wont run, or run extremely ruff.

I would verify that the code you are getting is for the egr, as yes if it is the egr code it would make a big difference in the smog test.

I would ask your mechanic if A. he would clean out the part. Or B. if you brought it to him could he install it. It should not take more then 1 -2 hours to do.

You can find the part for much cheaper than anywhere i know at (hope I am not spamming here) rockauto.

I just can not advice you to do it on your own. Being a 92 its hard to say if the parts are going to be rusted so, could you even remove them or possibly break a bolt.

Then again you can always try some of the additives you add to your fuel to pass the smog test, they make some really good ones now days, and that may only cost 15 bucks.
