1991 Celica Gt - Loud Whistle noise

Hey guys i've been stumped with this car for a little while -

The car was sitting for over 5 years and I have gone through all the basic maintenance (spark plugs, oil change, map sensor, cap and rotor etc)

The dilemma that I was having was a rough idle and very poor gas mileage, but while I was driving it one day the battery completely died on me (bad alternator I would guess) after charging the battery back up I went to finish my drive home and one of the vacuum hoses that went from the egr valve came off (I replaced it) but now i'm getting a very loud Whistling noise (idles nicely, timing is right at 10 now)

The other problem is the car won't go over 4k rpms, and when it hits that mark the power to the car just seemingly go down.. I have checked all the vacuum hoses and they all seem fine and ready to go... any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated

It sounds like you may still have a serious vacuum leak. do you have the whistle at all engine speeds?

When just idling you can't hear anything, but once you get up near 2500-4k it really starts to get going... power cuts out around that point as well...

when i'm standing on the drivers side of the car and giving the car gas it sounds like the noise is coming near the alternator, when standing on the alternator side it sounds like its coming from the other side... when standing right in front of the car it really sounds like it coming behind the cap and rotor... and when I was under the car it sounds like its really coming from the top... the whistling is playing games with me lol

I have that same problem,
Once i rev my car to 4k +, I hear that whistle sound.
I thought it was weird, but my mecanic never said anything about it.

I get something like that too. Rough idle and 22mpg average. I'm trying to figure out what the whistle is though... Sounds like a supercharger almost hahaha.

I've been replacing the vac lines trying to find the problem.

Could it be your EGR? If there is a leak it may be resonating off the fire wall making it sound like it's from the alternator area.

Sometimes if your EGR has a bad diaphragm it'll whistle as air passes through it improperly.

I'll be taking my EGR off and cleaning it/inspecting the diaphragm soon. If I get to it before you do, I'll let you know if this worked for me.
