slight jerk at take-off

My step-daughter has a late 80's celica and has a worry, so I went for a drive.

It idles smoothly, but when I gently put my foot down, there was a hesitation, then with a jerk something seemed to engage and off the car went. When I just put my foot dowb (not gently) the car took off just fine.

Any ideas, other than she should put down her foot a bit harder.

Thanks

John

Possibly a stuck butterfly? I'd say to start with basic maintenance by cleaning out the throttle body with specific throttle body cleaner. Also, check the transmission fluid (if AT) and if MT check the gear oil level/ fluid cleanliness.

Thank you, Ace2424

I shall follow your advice. The car has probably had no maintenance for ages.
