exhaust

Hello everyone out there. Hope all is well with everyone? I have a question i hope someone can help me with. I had just changed my tranny in my 2000 celica GT. It is an automatic and believe me it was not an easy job. But while I was changing it the heat shield on the exhaust manifold was broken off. I was wondering does anyone know if this has to be there? It is the one between the manifold and firewall. Now that's not there the rattle is gone but i smell a heat issue not bad but wa wondering if it's because the shield is gone?
Thank you for taking the time read this.

Is there anything close to the manifold? insulation? wiring? sensors? etc?

When I installed my header, obviously no heat shields, I had a bit of the insulation on the bottom side of my hood burn off.

you should have it there, Hell the whole purpose of the hood scoop on the 7th gen is to keep air moving past the manifold while driving to keep the heat down.
