93 celica st. engine broken and transmission with problems

hey guys, am new to this section and I need your help. this 93 st manual needs an engine and tranny replacement. will an engine and a tranny from a (93 to 97) prizm or corolla (1.6) work? I read on wikipedia that they have the same engine 4afe, and will a transmission from a 95 celica st (1.8) manual work on the 93 celica? there are several people upgrading their 1.6 engines for 1.8 and they only swap the ecu ( it means the transmission is the same for both cars. thx 4 the answers

manual trans? yes either 1.6 or 1.8 engine will work. 1.8 may have different mounts and as you know the ecu and wiring harness.

Mounts may be different, but the engine and trans will bolt together...there could be clutch differences I'm not aware of. If you can, get the 1.8 7A-FE. More torque and slightly better fuel economy due to a knock sensor.

yes, the 1.8 has a better tuned ECU and the extra torque helps you to get moving better in stop and go, you're dipping into throttle less to start moving. On the highway they're probably equal, but around town the 1.8 is easier to drive and gives slightly better economy.

You'll need the wiring harness, ecu, and I don't know if motor mounts are different or the clutch is any different. Trans should bolt on just the same.

I don't think that would work, the blocks aren't similar enough nor are the heads. its a gen1 F head vs a gen2 F head, big differences. I'm sure with a good cat converter the 1.8 would pass the tail pipe emissions. Does the car have EGR now? In some states there's a rule about swapping in a newer more emissions friendly engine in place of the older one, they'll use the emissions standards of the new engine when testing or something. Look into whats OK in your state and whats not. don't say anything about bigger, just say newer. From the outside, the 4A-FE and 7A-FE in the 6th gen celica and 7th gen corolla look identical from the top. You can only tell if you get down under and look at the oil pans.

I'm just telling because i replaced rings and bearing on a 7afe engine and then it was wrecked, (the engine is at home). I just came back from the local junkyard, and i saw that the blocks are different. But i saw that the corollas/prizms 93-97 (1.6 engine) have the same engine (code) but it's a second generation. Do you think it would work? Just taking the head and block and reusing everything from my previous engine?

I don't know, I know they changed alot between the gen's but the 2nd gen F head is the same more or less between the 7A and 4A. IIRC the 7A had a little bigger valves and maybe slightly different cams.
