1981 Celica GT - Carb.

Hi Folks.
1981 Toyota Celica GT, 223k plus miles, automatic Trans., no a.c. & no power steering - painted yellow. Cold engine start and car runs like crap, gags & sputters, stalls - but after 15 minutes something happens & car calms down and runs like a champ. Replaced original carb. years ago with a remanufactured carb and have rebuilt this carb a couple of times since then. Also, the reman. carb has five extra tubes that have no known hoses so I have capped these five little tubes that come out of the carb. The choke seems to be operating fine, but why after 15 minutes or so of running awful the car calms down and runs great?
Thank You

Those extra hoses sound like part of the auto choke and cold run circuit.
Has it had this start up trouble since you replace the carb years ago or has it only recently started.
If its only recent then its more likely to be an air leak somewhere (cracked hoses, bad manifold gasket, leaky brake booster).
Small leaks really kill things when the engine is cold but a warm engine has enough oomph to overpower a small leak.

1981 Celica

Hi Stepho,

Thanks for reply. Yes, problem has developed recently. I will try closer inspection of these hoses. Car did run a little better the other day, but it has been warm here - it is worse in the winter. Thanks again.
Happy Trails
