Can you be a bit clearer about which type it is?
To me, a chop top is a car that has had the roof section lowered.
Toyota never did this from the factory.
It is occasionally done as a custom conversion by individual body shops.
I have never heard of any company doing this to 900 cars but I willing to hear about it.

Tell us what info you have on it and we can see what corroborating evidence we can find.
Can you provide photos of the car?
Can you provide photos of the ID plate in the engine bay (hide the serial number if you want)?
Does it have any special compliance plates?
Any paperwork?
Anything pointing to a particular company that did the work?

Cheers.

Are you sure it was AMC?
ASC did a similar thing although I thought they started with the 82 model year (but US style model years confuse poor Australians like me)

Anyway, the ASC version looked like this:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/...ian-Sunchaser/
That's actually the Australian version but the American version of the Challeger Sunchaser was made by ASC post-factory with Toyota's blessing by chopping the tops off coupes and sold through Toyota dealers.

Here's a few more post-factory convertibles:
1980 Griffith http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/brochures/Celica/80 Celica Griffith Hatch-22 p1.jpg
1980 Grandeur - http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/...-Grandeur-SLR/
1981 Tropic - http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/...many-Tropic-1/
1983 Matrix3 - http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/...3xx-US-Matix3/
198? Schwan - http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/...cabrio/p01.jpg

And for completeness, a bucket load of other Celica brochures:

American Custom Coachworks of Beverly Hills, California, produced approximately 900 full convertibles. These are 4-seaters, retaining the back seat, and do not have a targa-top and integrated roll bar. A fire at the company several years later destroyed primary sources of historical records. All that remains are secondary sources in period literature and the few example cars that have not been sent to the crusher.
