Thumbs up 1991 celica st engine swap

hello, i have a 1991 celica stx (has 5 spd manual and rear fin) and i want to swap my little 1.6 out and put a more powerful engine in. i was wondering what engines would fit and what i would have to add to make each engine fit and work properly. also, im kinda new at this so i would liek to know what engine would be the easiest. thanks

4a-ge

i heard the 4A-GE engine would be the most easiest and alright power gain, also there are alot of aftermarket parts out there for it, is that true?

Well the mounts are the same, and it uses the same series transmissions because they are both A series engines. However a new wire harness and ecu would still be needed. However, the gains of an early 4AGE swap would not be very great as they really aren't much more powerful. A 4AGZE swap or even a later 20 valve swap is still possible but 4AGZEs are becoming few and far between and the 20 valves have to be imported. Also the 20 valves do not perform as documented, usually are dynoed at much less than they are rated, especially the silver top.

There is more aftermarket support but still only so much is available, its not like the support for similar engines from other makes (SR20DE, B18, B16 etc)

honestly, swap in a 7A-FE. Here's why...
1. its cheap to get and plentiful
2. uses the same trans and mounts will bolt up
3. you get torque
4. with a pair of mild cams and a little more compression (you'll want to rebuild any motor you drop in) it'll have more power than the 4A-GE and not be too far behind the 20v's and silver/black tops in terms of 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times. Hell, might even beat them due to having torque. Did I mention there's torque?

yes, but you'd need all that for a 4A-GE as well anyways, 7A stuff is more common.

yes.
