Okay so this has been going on a while just thought I'd ask to see what would help fix or whatev.
issues:
*with clutch put in (reverse) to fast makes a slamming noise and shakes whole car.
*when putting in other gears slams if I do to fast
*shifts kinda slow with little ease
*also sometimes pushing the clutch in too fast will make a slamming noise
* honestly doesn't feel like a whole lot of pressure in the clutch. replace master cylinder and slave " gave a bit more pressure
*downshifting into 2nd is really hard and grinds if I don't hold in clutch for a good bit.
*when i bought the car the clutch was shot to shit and slipping bad over 3000 rpm... replace old with a new stock clutch kit. I'm pretty sure I installed it right with a detailed guide did break 1 bolt on the clutch pressure plate but no issues yet " damn gf over tightened lol" .
My main question is will replacing the tranny fix all this? and is it better to just get a different car or stick with this. I don't want a money pit but I love this damn car so much
Could possibly be a worn down or loose motor mount, if you hear a bang and feel it on very hard shifts. Even with all new engine mounts, my car lurches a little bit shifting into reverse and makes some noise on hard shifts.
As for the grind into second, the S53 trans is known for the 2nd or 3rd gear synchros going out. Personally, my third gear synchros are on the way out. You can try to swap the fluid around, 90-91 list Dex III ATF for the transmission, while 92-93 list 75w90 gear oil. I've tried both but it didn't help me, but for some others it has helped significantly. Currently I am actually using GM synchromesh fluid in the transmission and actually dont have really any problem unless its a very hard downshift or from a very high speed (as in from 55 into third gear). If you want to know for sure if its the synchro, double clutch a downshift into that gear, that negates the need for a syncho, if it doesn't grind then you know for sure the synchro is causing it. I'd be wary of another trans from a 90-93 celica. The 94-99 celicas however use an S54 transmission with better synchronizers so thats always an option.
Some guys swear by RedLine gearoil. Claiming it gives better, smooter shifting, quiets synchros, etc.
Can't say I've ever tried it.
I just changed the axle seals on my E153 tranny, so I will refill with Redline.
I'll let you guys know how it does.
I'm not actually having any issues with the transmission, but after 5K rpm's , 2nd gear wants to grind. I have to ease it in. No power shifting. :-(
Oh yeah I forgot about redline. Some guys really do swear by it, I always wanted to give it a go but when synchromesh worked out I just never really got around to it.
I've heard guys swear by synchromesh too. In fact, I may end up using that instead of the Redline, I've only seen a couple of Redline products here locally.
I dont want to wait on an online purchase delivery. I will be fished reinstalling my tranny by monday night. As long as my job doesn't throw a wrench into things.
Are syncros replaceable? Also down shifting into 2nd is hard with med- high rpms its not making a grind noise exactly its like a grind slam and kapoot. Quite embarrassing to do on front of people, and it take a good amount of force to put it in 2nd.
Also if its not too much trouble what exact engine performance part can I buy to make torque and HP none of the crappy chips, like specifics name, where to buy online or tips. and can a 1990 toyota celica GT fwd non turbo become fast and fun. sorry for soo many questions and does anyone have good interior ideas got about 4gs to dump into the car to bring out the best... hopefully
Synchros are replaceable but it requires special knowledge and tools to be able to replace them as you essentially have to tear down the whole transmission. Also, they are not cheap. Its usually a better bet to find another trans.
Without going into forced induction, or major work, the only thing really worthwhile, as mentioned in the other thread, is cams along with a header and full exhaust. Honestly I would first put the money into getting your trans straightened out, and a quality suspension before engine work, but thats just me.
If I go the suspension route could you help me out if I get stuck on anything? Also what tranny should I buy I'm going have a mech do it this time and buy a new clutch kit and fly wheel at the same time to save time and pain. I really want to go the forced induction route but I also need to be able to pass smog since I live in California =/. Do you know what cams are best to buy for this kinda car. Like I said before I'm huge into DSM and just started to venture into celicas =)

Yes, there are a few options for suspension that you can go with, but its all dependent upon budget, the area you drive in, and your intentions.
As for the transmission, the manual trans after 93 on Celicas and MR2s with the 5SFE were the S54 trans which, the only real difference is that they have dual cone synchros and are much less likely to have the problems the S53 is known for.
As for cams, the only ones I know of are from webcamshafts, I honestly haven't looked into them too much so I do not have any real specific information on them.
