speedometer, C.C. and O/D problems

Hi all, first post here. Did a search and could not find the answer to my problem/s so thought I'd post.

I just picked up a 94 ST with a blown engine a few weeks ago. I located another engine (1.8L) and had it installed.

Everything was fine and the car ran like a top. Everything worked great. I started fixing the car up. Installed a new deck and getting ready to buy new rims. I want to fix this car up as I also own a 86 Toyota pickup lowrider that I had a LOT of fun fixing up.

Then the other night I notice that the speedometer doesn't work anymore. Also the the cruise control stopped working too. And now the O/D is blinking.

Now when I start the car cold it seems like it is in high gear for about one minute (there is no light on the dash) then it kicks into gear and and there is pickup and the O/D light comes on and bbegins to flash and stays flashing as long as I have the car on.

If I push the button on the shift knob the O/D light comes on and the car shifts and runs like it is in low gear. If I shut the car off it again needs 1 minute before it kicks in and the O/D light starts blinking. In addition the "check light" comes on and off.

Any idea whats going on here? I am trying to figure out whats wrong before I have to take it in to the shop. Will I hurt the car driving it like this?

Thanks in advance for any help someone may provide.

yeah I checked my transmission oil and its full. I wonder if the Cruise Control and speedometer cable is connected somehow.

I talked with the former owner and they could not help me as to why the O/D light blinks when I engage. They said that its either ON in which case the light says "O/D ON" or its off in which case the light goes out. But mines stays on and blinks! GO figure!

I bought a Chilton's manual and I will be scouring it tomorrow for clues as to why this is happening. The check engine light comes on intermittantly so do I need to do the paper clip trick WHILE the light is on? Because it is not on ALL the time.

Other than these dumb problems the car runs like a top! Little slow but with gas at 2 bucks a gallon, I'm glad now that its a small engine!

Has anybody ever had any problems with speedometer cable and CC together?

yeah, pull the codes.. even if the light is off, it sounds like an intermittent error. and, i know the 4th gens have a plug where the cable comes out of the tranny for the cruise.

good luck either way. i hope the codes you pull help you out
