swap thermostat?

my thermostat is 16 years old, original, and working fine, but i have it out at the moment for another job, and i also have a new beck/arnley one made in Germany that just tested ok in a pot of boiling water.

is this the kind of part that you swap out if it is convenient, or do you try to stick with the original when it is still working?

also, the new one doesn't just shut below 180. it seems to close more and more as it gets below 170. that normal? is there supposed to be a taper like that, or are these just slow?

I was wondering too if a working thermostat should be changed if it's still working. But since you have it out, might as will replace it to be safe. It is 16 years old. Many members recommend replacing it with an OEM stat but Beck/Arnley is a good brand.

It's important that the thermostat fully open within 20+ degree of 180. Closing at 170 should be fine thou.

i don't know if there is such a thing as OEM after 16 years. i think the dealer starts rotating manufacturers just like all the big brands after a few years. i called the dealer and they couldn't tell me anything about that. it's actually really hard to get this kind of info. i heard stant is good..they make the Gates ones, but for my car it doesn't come with a jiggle valve so I went with what they had at my local import parts place. at least it's not made in china?

I usually say OEM to cover any of Toyota's suppliers, such as Kuzeh for the thermostat. The problem with some aftermarket parts (especially house brands) is that they manufacture many "one-size-fit-all" then adapter it to a specified vehicle. Having said that; I still buy a lot of aftermarket parts because dealership prices can be through the roof.

dealer t-state for most toyota models is in the $12-$18 range. Honestly, it's what I prefer.

you know, the dealer did say their stats were Kuzeh, but he didn't know anything about them other than that they are made in israel. i think of israel as a good place of origin, but is it better enough to justify me going to the dealer, paying $33 (what i was quoted, maybe i could get them to knock a few bucks off) and then hauling myself back over to the other store to return the beck/arnley? i mean, german engineering. hmm...germany vs israel...something familiar and creepy about that :\
