We just bought my sister a standard '95 Celica GT for her first car. I've noticed that when you're in gear and give the car gas the shifter itself will kick two inches or so back/forth depending on which gear you're in. It's most noticeable in 3rd gear, in which the shifter itself will kick back two or so inches when you press the throttle. First will kick back slightly, and second and fourth will kick forward slightly. Fifth is pretty solid, but I'm sure that's because there's less torque in that gear.

Any ideas?

Yes, it stays in gear. Giving the car gas in general is rougher than it should be, so my first guess is worn engine and transmission mounts.

A possibility. Maybe check the shifter cables/linkage. Sounds like alot of slack and may just need to be adjusted

The cables have small rubber bushings that get worn over time, thats the only thing to really wear out over time. I'd honestly bet that its just severely worn engine mounts. Even with newish (~15000 miles on them) mounts on acceleration my shifter still moves back and forth 1/2 an inch to an inch or so.
