5th gear high rpms

i have a 1991 celica st. it seems like it runs higher rpms than other cars ive had. when im going 55mph in 4th gear my rpms are at 3000 rpms but when i switch to 5th gear it stays right around 2800 rpms at 55mph. is this normal.

Yes it is normal.

The transmissions are geared rather closely for better acceleration, also at this rpm it puts the engine in the beginning of the powerband and makes it easier to overtake without changing gears, if it was at, say 2000rpm at 60, then realistically you'd have to downshift to overtake.

Ok thanks I was just worried that I would ruin the engine if I took it on the highway going 70-80 mph

Nope not at all.

I used to consider the rpm on the highway as being a little high myself, well, until I bought my Kawasaki. Hell, at 70mph I'm sitting almost at 10,000rpm.

The engines are designed to do it. I was scared too when I first bought it, but now, I absolutely love it. It's geared perfectly for city driving or track racing too. Also, downhill runs are really fun in this car.

Nothing like having a rustang pull up next to you and try to race you when you're going 60 already, and just punching the gas because you're already at 3k rpm's and he's lower. I love the looks on their faces.
