02 Celica, just serviced and knocking noise!

Hi Guys,

I started hearing a knocking noise in my Celica (2002, 101k) about 3 weeks ago. The noise starts at the cruising point on the accelerator when I want to maintain a constant speed. If I am doing 70mph it gets quite load at 4000 rpm or when I change gear. It gets louder when I go uphill.

I brought it in to be serviced the next day and got everything seen to. They told me that the oil was low and the reason for the knocking, but would go away after the service. 2 weeks later its just as bad. I am going in tomorrow again, but would anyone have an idea what it might be?

Just don't want to have to re-build the engine and hoping its an easier fix.

Thanks in advance

That seems like an issue of not being in too tall a gear that does not offer the required torque multiplication for the proper load uphill. Do you have a manual or automatic??

Apolgies should have been more clear.

Its a manual. but only hit 4000rpm when overtaking. When I am in 6th gear on the motorway, the rpm is ~3100rpm so it rarerly hits 4000rpm (only when overtaking or speeding up onto the motorway).

The hill that it happens on is about 50 metres long and I 3mph in 4th on that and the rev counter reads ~2000 rpm so don't think its in too high a gear.

Brought it back to the garage today and told me that the pistons will have to be replaced or engine rebuilt!

Yep, the 1ZZ has been notorious for severe oil consumption issues.
