2000 Celica GT RPM spikes

I just purchased a 2000 Celica gt with 140xxx miles and a manual transmission a couple weeks ago. I'm having an issue when I shift gears the rpms spike upwards of 5k and after a few seconds drop back down. It's more noticeable when I accelerate quickly. I haven't had a check engine light yet and I cleaned the MAS but it didn't seem to make a difference. Any idea what could cause this?

Check your MAF sensor. You can test your clutch as well using this method.

1 - Park your car in an empty parking space
2 - While the car is at idle, put the car in 5th gear (overdrive)
3 - Start letting go of the clutch and give a little gas
4 - If the car bucks and stalls, your clutch is fine and strong
5 - If the car starts rolling in 5th gear, the clutch is toast and needs to be replaced.
