1995 Celica Timing Belt

I'm looking at buying a 1995 Celica from a private seller. Its in pretty good shape but the only thing I'm concerned about is the timing belt. The seller has just put a new timing belt in because the last one broke. I'm assuming this occured while driving the vehicle. Could this have caused any damage to the engine, etc., that I should be aware of? The seller told me that his mechanic said that everything was fine, that if he had been driving a Honda it would have been bad but since it was a Toyota it was okay. Is this true? I would hate to buy a car that gives up the ghost in only a few weeks.

Thanks.

Just make sure he also changed the belt tensioner, it would be a great plus
