New Celica Owner with a Question

Hi I just bought a 2003 Celica GT 5spd with 70k on it. I noticed a lot of road noise while driving so I checked the drivetrain. I noticed an exposed gear in the front near the differential. I'm a little worried because I am used to driving trucks and I've never seen an exposed gear like this before. It is good size, exposed on the passenger side and closed on the driver side, and is a straight toothed gear. Is this normal or is something very wrong? Thank you.

Hey nevermind. I figured out that it is the flywheel and the dust cover just came off, exposing the flywheel.
