Getting shafted by a mechanic?

I own a 2001 Toyota Celica 5 speed car and within the past year (February 15th) I needed to have some mechanic work done. I had tried to solve the problem myself (several tune ups, replace the valve gasket, engine cleaner, etc.) but nothing would fix the code (Cylinder 2 misfire/Random cylinder misfire). In turn, I took it so a local mechanic to get a diagnostic/quote which I let make the repair. He diagnosed the problem as a cracked piston and charged me $2,100 for a "top" rebuild as "no other engines were available anywhere" (I attempted to replace the entire engine rather than having a rebuild). I received a year warranty on the job if I had an oil change done within 500 miles, which I carried out with his company)
Within the past two months, I have been noticed the heads tapping (a sign of low oil) frequently, which resulted in me having to replace over 5 quarts of oil over the timespan. Yesterday, I checked the oil again and noticed that after refilling the oil 3 weeks ago, the dipstick was barely showing oil (it was that low). So I took it to the same mechanic to get a diagnostic/quote. He told me that the bottom half of the engine needed repair because it was showing "metal in the plugs/the rings were warped" and that it would cost $2,400. He also said it isn't covered under his warranty.
Today, I spoke with my neighbor who has done extensive work on a number of makes and models of cars. Both him and his wife agreed that with a simple compression check, the mechanic should have been able to see the problem prior to yesterday. I feel like I have a case against the mechanic that when he tore down my engine, that it needed a complete rebuild rather than just a top rebuild.

I usually use Cloud to host my pictures, and for some reason it's not allowing a .pdf to just be hosted, but rather downloaded. BUT this is a copy of the 3 invoices from the mechanic: http://cl.ly/2w232f1S2U1J0r3G371e

1st off, a "Top rebuild " would be rebuilding the head-the top of the engine.
A cracked piston would require the bottom of the engine to be disassembled, as the piston is in the bottom half of the engine.
Sounds like this mechanic is a thief!

Unfortunately, most will take you for what they can squeeze out of you.Best way to find a good mechanic is word of mouth.

It helps-alot.
You'd be surprised at what you find when you get a 2nd opinion. Many times you will get 2 different BS stories.

Sorry, someone pointed out my error. Turns out I was understanding wrong, and he fixed a cracked valve. I posted a link to the 3 invoices we got from him and that should clear up what I'm having trouble conveying. Thanks for the replies, I'm really hoping to get enough information so I can approach him and hopefully get my car fixed.
