2002 Toyota Celica Gear Box Interchange

Hey I am a Newbie, Guys I recently bought a gear box/manual transmission for my 2002 toyota celica gt 1zz engine but although the gear box is for a 1zz engine, I found out it came from a toyota matrix. It bolts up perfectly to my engine but the shifter positions on the boxes are different! My original gearbox has the shifting mechanism towards the front near to the radiator and the new box has them at the back near the exhaust, I think the sides are different too. Can I do something to make it work or do I have to purchase another gear box. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

You may have to build a custom shifting linkage.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am in Jamaica where most Mechanics have to do customizations on their own. Hard to just order what you want from a Machine Shop. Could I transfer the gears from one box to the other since I still have my old gear box and all the shifting mechanism? Just a thought...

sorry man you should have done some research. you have to use the selector shaft from your transmission. machine the new case and convert the new trans to support the celica. goto newcelica.org, this has been covered several times

Thanks Smaay, my impatience got the better of me, I bought a 6 speed LSD box from a used parts guy and decided to resell the previous box. This 6 speed box on the 1zz engine is way different in performance than my previous 5 speed. I think I am going to do a 2zz swap early next year.
