97 Celica GT convertible in-op

Recently I purchased this Celica and due to the top being inoperable I thought I could fix it. I removed the 2 motors hooked them to the battery and got nothing. When running a continuity test I had low resistance. at this point I disassembled the motors and could smell a burnt coil and armature. I have recently purchased 2 reconditioned motors and after manually trying to move the gear neither move. Prior to installation is there any precaution I should take or check to insure these motors are working satisfactory? I did get voltage at the contacts where the motor clip in so I am certain there is power. I am uncertain of the electric circuit or where the fuses are located since I have found out these were an after market installation.
If any one has experience please help.
Thanks, Will
