94 Celica convertible ECU reset

Hey guys. New here.

I've read that if the car is rather sluggish in terms of changing gears, power delivery and response, I should reset the ECU.

Is that true?

Does a 94 Celica have ECU?

How do I reset it? I've searched the forums but either there are no posts about this, or I haven't searched thoroughly.

Thank you.

Are you getting a check engine light?

Any recent services that have been done? Tune up? Transmission service?

Any services neglected?

Yes the car has an ECU, essentially anything with electronic fuel injection needs an ECU to operate

I'm not sure of the time required to reset the ecu, but simply disconnecting the battery, or removing the EFI fuse(or any fuse labeled for the computer, should be EFI fuse though) for a matter of time will reset it. Could be only a matter of 20 minutes or so, or possibly longer like OBDII systems (96+), to be honest, that I do not know off hand.

@RobMilkshakes

Nope not getting a check engine light. I bought the car less than a week ago (2nd hand of course), and as far as I know it has been serviced regularly. The only thing I've changed was the battery as the last one died and I had to get a new one.

To me it seems that the car is a bit sluggish in terms of power delivery. Maybe I'm not used to Toyota yet (my last car was a 92 Honda Civic). Also, I've heard that by resetting the ECU you get the car to tune into your driving habits. Is that right?

Disconnecting the battery. Both cables, or just one? And when I reset the ECU, is there anything I should be looking out for, e.g. windows not working properly for a while, the radio/CD-player resetting (it's AIWA, not the original system), etc?

Thanks!

I would imagine yours would be a GT model? if thats the case, granted its a consideraly heavier car than your civic was, but the engine does have a decent amount of torque compared to most honda engines, so it shouldn't feel too sluggish.

It wont tune it to driving habits, it may change some of the fuel mapping slightly depending on new inputs from several sensors.

Its a simple system, you'd have to reset your radio presets if you disconnect the battery, but thats all. Whenever it comes to the battery you want to disconnect the ground first, and reconnect it last, so removing the negative battery terminal would be the way to go.

HOWEVER, I honestly believe if it truly is acting sluggish, something else would be the cause, its very unlikely it has anything to do with the ecu, wouldn't hurt to try though. I would do a thorough once over, check the condition of the plugs, wires, cap, air filter, and transmission fluid. I would start there, to check the routine maintenance.
