Canada Backfiring - 1980 Toyota Celica

My 1980 Toyota Celica (5 speed, R20) is backfiring a little when idling and also more if I am trying to slow down by using 3rd or 2nd gear - engine braking. So far I changed dist. cap & rotor, wires, spark plugs, muffler, all fluids... and it's still happening. Any/ all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Neb

Sounds like it needs a basic tune-up.
Pay special attention to the mixture screw on the carburetor (it is probably too rich).
Make sure the timing chain tensioner isn't loose.
Make sure the distributor timing is correct.

Look on Ebay for the 20R/22R factory manual to tell you each step.

Thanks. However, I did all that except the timing chain tension.
