Just got an 86 GT Need some help!!!

Hey Guys,

I just added an 86 GT LB 5spd to my arsenal.

I got it for $500.00, not terrible.

Anyway, I have two problems to address right off the bat.

1. The main cooling fan does not work. It is shot, I tried wiring it hot to the battery and no luck. So where can I find a good afforable replacement? I checked car-parts.com and found a salvage yard with one for 45.00 but I am waiting to hear back. Has anyon had any luck with the Hayden fans? If so what size should I get.

2. My speedometer does not work!!! I need this to work especially with the amount of power this thing has. I have been told that it is really tricky and not to mess with it myself. ANd that I would need a really expensive dealer part.
Obviously that is not what I want to hear, so if You know how I can fix this let me know. Or even where to start.

Thanks for the help and keep the Yotas Alive -Seth

Well, I checked the speedo cable and it seems fine I can turn it from either end and the other end spins. So I hooked it up to the tranny and positioned the other end so I could see it (Gauges are removed).

I went for a runa nd the thing didn't even spin. So I am thinking that it is at the tranny. Any idea what this is or if I can fix it. Thanks- Seth

on the cable. it is tricky to get it in the tranny right. with it in the car, it is almost impossible to get tightened all the way. i played hell on it. try taking it apart at the firewall connector, put it on jack stands, and put it in gear and let it drive the tires. just make sure everything is right there before you go to the tranny.

i have a fan laying around.... cant promise it will work. ill test it out if you want it

Awesome Thanks for the info.

So, there is a good chance that it will work, but it might not be in all the way. I figured worse case scenario, I have to get the speedo drive gear in the tranny replaced.

Hey if your fan works, I might be interested. I just hooked mine up to the battery and no go. But I did the same to the AC fan and it turned.

Thanks again for the response.

As a replacement, the Ford Taurus fan pulls a lot of air and they're cheap in the jy.

Will the Taurus fan bolt up??? and what years/motor combop should I look for?

Turns out the speedo gear went bad, so I am replacing that. I also just replaced the exhaust manifold which had the infamous cracks.

But otherwise things are looking good. I need to get the mounting brackets for the stereo, the guy before me gutted it.

It won't bolt up, you'd have to make some brackets and wire it in.
